Gum Recontouring

Gum Recontouring

There is more than a beautiful smile than just white teeth.

Do you have a gummy smile or do your teeth seem like unusually small or boxy? Or are you unhappy with the contours of your gums; are they receding and making your teeth seem too long? We know there is much more to an aesthetic smile than teeth alone. Our practice provides treatment to improve the quality of your overall appearance–gums included.

We include gums as an important part of comprehensive treatment planning with our patients. We regularly assess gums for periodontal disease, which is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Infected gums can recede, negatively impacting the aesthetics of your smile and your oral health. It is possible to have periodontal disease and have no warning signs. That is one reason why regular dental checkups and periodontal examinations are very important.

Dr. Palmer says:

Are you not happy with the shape and appearance of your gums? We may be able to provide treatment to reshape your gums to their proper contours and aesthetics.

Treatment methods depend upon the type of disease and how far the condition has progressed. Good oral hygiene at home is essential to help keep periodontal disease from becoming more serious or recurring. You don’t have to lose teeth to periodontal disease. Brush, clean between your teeth, eat a balanced diet, and schedule regular dental visits for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

If you notice any of the following signs of periodontal (gum) disease, we recommend scheduling an appointment right away:

  • gums that bleed when you brush your teeth
  • red, swollen or tender gums
  • gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • bad breath that doesn’t go away
  • pus between your teeth and gums
  • loose teeth
  • a change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • change in the fit of partial dentures

The good news is that you can help prevent periodontal (gum) disease by taking good care of your teeth every day and having regular dental checkups. Talk to us about ways to restore your gums to their proper and healthy contours and appearance.
